Google wants you to think Ingress is just a game, that it is nothing more than something you play to pass the time away, but it is so much more than that. It’s an e-book, too! Or at least it will be soon.
The new e-book spin-off is called The Alignment, and will be written by New York Times best-selling author Thomas Greanias. The new book series will be based around Ingress’ lore and characters, as well as characters from the author’s Raising Atlantis, serving as sort of a prequel.

Here’s the story as it has been revealed so far:
The series features astro-archaeologist Conrad Yeats and linguist Serena Serghetti from Greanias’s New York Times bestselling Raising Atlantis series of books. They join a new character from the Ingress game, Hank Johnson, in a “sci-tech adventure set in Africa, and the hunt for the true secret behind the Queen of Sheba’s gold and her relationship with King Solomon”.
This is certainly a new chapter for Google, as it enters the company’s first move into science fiction. I guess being a dominate player in the mobile OS market, as well as an Internet search and social giant, just wasn’t enough for Mountain View.

The first 150-page novella in the series is expected to hit Google Play on April 2nd, with other e-book retailers to follow shortly thereafter. It is also noted that hardcover versions of the novellas will also be made available at some point in the future.
Ingress certainly has a great story behind it, and having Niantic Labs team up with Grenaias helps ensure the book will not just be popular with fans of the AR game, but Raising Atlantis fans as well.
It’s also worth mentioning that the books are also believed to cross over into the actual game, as they are expected to feature hidden passcodes within the book’s pages. What do you think of the idea of the game making its way into a book series, excited or not?
