The GPL license requires that Android handset makers release the Linux kernel source code for their devices. Unfortunately, many of the lesser known manufacturers tend to ignore the agreement altogether. Luckily, Oppo isn’t one of these companies, as it is has now released the source to its official forum.
Ideally, all companies would release the kernel source prior to launching their products, or at the very least on the same day. The Oppo Find 5 has actually been around for about a month now.
Even if a little later than we’d like, a smaller vendor like Oppo complying to the GPL is still a very good step in the right direction. It also shows that Oppo is interested in really standing out from the crowd of Chinese handset makers out there.
Having the kernel source code available for the Find 5 is certainly good news, and really opens up the door for developers. There is a lot to like about the Find 5, from its stylish body to its true HD display and quad-core processor. Basically you get HTC Droid DNA hardware but at a very affordable $499 for the 16GB model in the United States.
For those that like messing around with custom ROMs and other modding efforts, the Oppo Find 5 might be a decent option but unless you are really drawn in by its 5-inch 1080p display, you will probably still be better served by the $299 16GB LG Nexus 4. It likely just comes down to design preference and how important an HD display is to you.
What do you think of the Oppo Find 5, interested in picking it up or do you feel there are plenty of other similarly spec’d devices out there from better known brands?
