After months and months of tireless rumors and speculations, HTC’s Droid DNA finally enjoyed the gala presentation we all expected, snatching the crown of US’s first ever 1080p smartphone.
Though the phone is definitely not all screen, with a bunch of other enviable specs and features, the question on everybody’s lips is just how good that 5-inch 1920 x 1080 pix res panel is. Is there more marketing there than performance needed in real life? Is it pushing the envelope too much?
Those are all questions to be thoroughly answered over time, but meanwhile we have some provisional hints courtesy of a quick Gizmodo comparison. The online publication had the honor of taking the DNA for an exclusive spin and used the time to engage it in a high-stakes face off with all the other smartphones with the best displays around.
The iPhone 5, Nexus 4, HTC One X, Samsung Galaxy S3, Nokia Lumia 920 and Samsung Galaxy Note 2 panels all got compared with the DNA’s, with the conclusion being somewhat surprising. Unfortunately for HTC, the only area where the DNA’s S-LCD 3 display really shines is in pixel density, while brightness and color are mediocre (by the highest of standards, of course).
Overall, Gizmodo ranked DNA’s screen third, which is not too bad, but it’s far from what we expected from such a seemingly groundbreaking device. Even more painful for HTC, the DNA got beaten by One X’s panel, which should have been for all intents and purposes inferior. Ouch!
