We have seen plenty of chatter about a Microsoft Office suite for mobile devices. Specifically, Office Mobile for Android. In fact, it was just last month when rumors were calling for the apps to come available for Android in March 2013. And well, it looks like today has brought some new information. Not to mention, a release timeframe that is not in March.
The key here, this latest round of Office Mobile details are not coming from Microsoft. Instead they are coming by way of the folks at The Verge. They are reporting that “several sources close to Microsoft’s plans” have said that the company will release Office Mobile for Android and iOS in early 2013. Breaking this down a bit further and we learn that the iOS release is expected first, in February or early March, with Android following a few months later, in May.
Otherwise, in terms of details, it looks like Office Mobile will launch as a suite of apps. And even nicer, with a free read-only option. The basic read-only option is expected to include Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents and those needing editing will be required to have an Office 365 subscription. No word on the expected price for the editing, however it was noted that the apps “won’t go very far in attempting to replace regular full use of a desktop Office version.”
Bottom line here, it now looks like Android users have about 6-7 months before Office Mobile will arrive. Our question, given the current options available for creating and editing docs, how many users are still waiting for an official Office app from Microsoft? Of course, this is coming from the guy who bought a new notebook about six months back and has yet to install anything of the sort.
