We had known that Sony was planning to launch the Xperia Go smartphone in Canada. And well, it looks like that time has arrived. The handset has launched with Fido and is also available direct from Sony. That said, you will be spending the same regardless of the option you choose, however the purchase decision may come down to the color you prefer.
You see, Fido has the handset available in black and/or white. Sony on the other hand, has the Xperia Go available in yellow. The price, Fido has the handset listed at $300 and Sony has it listed at $299.99. There is one catch for those choosing to go with the yellow model though, Sony has the ship date listed as November 19, which just means you have a few extra days to wait.
Pricing and availability aside, lets talk specs. The Sony Xperia Go, as evident by the price, is not what we would consider a high-end device. Not to mention, it is launching with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich which is sure to upset and bother some. But those bits aside, that is not to say the handset is bad and doesn’t have anything going for it.
The Xperia Go is water resistant. In fact, Sony is touting this one as being the “most durable water resistant smartphone.” What this really means is that the handset has the IP67 rating which protects the device against dust and immersion in water up to 1 meter for 30 minutes. The Xperia Go also has a scratch resistant display and what Sony calls “wet screen control.” The latter is an option we are not entirely sure how many people want, but if you have the desire to send status updates while in the shower — rest assured in knowing the Xperia Go will work for you.
Finally, you can also expect a 3.5-inch (480 x 320) Mobile Bravia display, dual-core 1GHz processor, 512MB of RAM, 8GB of internal storage, a microSD card slot and a 5 megapixel rear-facing camera with 720p video recording.
