There’s more bad news for Apple, who are already having quite a rough year, what with the mass complaints about Apple Maps and the on-going court saga with various phone manufactures and Android developers.

The respected Consumer Reports has come to the conclusion that the iPhone 5 is not quite up to scratch when it comes to top of the line smartphones. Below is an image of the result from Consumer Report’s own tests, which will appear in the February issue of the magazine.

As you can see in the rankings, grouped by service carrier, the iPhone 5 is consistently outranked by Samsung’s Galaxy S3. It’s certainly a bitter blow to be repeatedly topped by your biggest rival. Interestingly, the iPhone 5 doesn’t even register in the top three handsets on either the T-Mobile nor the Verizon networks.
The LG Optimus G is their highest ranked phone under both AT&T and Sprint, so it’s not just Samsung that Apple has to worry about. The high-end Motorola Razr handsets also managed to notch up a couple wins over Apple and Samsung as well, which goes to show that other Android smartphone manufacturers are definitely capable of producing competitive products.
None of this is particularly surprising though, as this year has seen recording breaking numbers of users adopting Android as their platform of choice around the world. But where does this leave Apple?
Well, Consumer Reports’ clear preference for Android phones doesn’t entirely match up with all of the market data. Apple still saw excellent levels of growth last year, and is still quite a way out in front when it comes to the tablet market. But one thing is clear: Android is on the march, and both consumers and reviewers seem to agree that Apple no longer holds the crown for best premium product in the smartphone market.
