You know those speculations about the Asus Qube being the newest member of the Nexus family, coming to replace the failed orb-shaped Nexus Q? They were mostly wrong, but the rumors sparked by a FCC filing were on to something after all – Asus has just unveiled the Qube with Google TV, a set-top box that will bring Google’s services and apps right to your living room.
With its cubical build, the Asus Qube somehow resembles Boxee boxes, although Asus’ device has a markedly different industrial design. The gizmo will give users access to the latest version of Google TV, but Asus didn’t miss the chance to add its own touch to the UI. This touch is the Qube interface, which shows UI elements “via a rotating on-screen cube shape”. Users will be able to rotate the Qube interface using a motion-sensing remote control or using a smartphone or tablet running a companion app.
Asus offers Qube users 50GB of free storage on its proprietary WebStorage cloud service. The fact that Asus has modified the Google TV interface and bundled its own cloud storage service suggests that the Qube wasn’t intended as a Nexus-like device, as some rumors stated.
In the short press release that announced the Qube, Asus also mentioned that Qube buyers will get access to “100,000 movies and TV shows from Netflix and Amazon Instant Video”. Of course, all the goodness of YouTube will be at your fingertips, along with many other apps and media stores.
We’ll bring you more details as we find them.
