Wow, what a day we’ve had, and the 2013 edition of the Consumer Electronics Show hasn’t even formally started. Let’s recap the highlights of this crazy Monday in an attempt to distinguish the signal from the noise. For the sake of simplicity, we’ll include in this roundup Nvidia’s event on Sunday evening, which could turn out to be the biggest news for Android enthusiasts at CES 2013.
Team AA is out in force

Nvidia was widely expected to announce a new iteration of its Tegra line of mobile SoCs, but Jen-Hsun Huang’s company took us all by surprise with the crazy contraption that is the Project Shield. In a nutshell, the Shield is a handheld console-cum-controller that can stream games to HDTVs and play games that are streamed from PCs fitted with Kepler-based video cards. We have the full rundown on the Project Shield here.But Tegra 4 was the most important news, hands down. We’ll probably see the new quad-core A15 SoC (a world first) in many high-end tablets and smartphones over the next year. Acer Iconia B1 preceded by its fame
Acer did a lousy job at keeping the Iconia B1 secret, so when they finally decided to show it to the world, all the surprise was gone. A mere hours to go before this announcement the Iconia B1 was thoroughly reviewed. Still, it’s good to hear the official details.The Iconia B1 will compete with the Nexus 7 and come “later this year” for less than $150. This is the device that was rumored to cost just $99, so color us disappointed. All the details here.
Vizio and Alcatel open the floodgates
Two smaller companies, Vizio and Alcatel, have also decided that the day before CES starts is the best day to let loose a flurry of tablets and smartphones.Alcatel’s fifteen minutes of fame are all but guaranteed, thanks to the One Touch Idol Ultra, the world’s slimmest smartphone, at just 6.45mm. Other highlights are the phablet Scribe X and the Evo 7 range of tablets.
Vizio leaked the first ever tablet running on Tegra 4, but details are scarce for now. Other new gizmos from Vizio are a 7-incher running on Tegra 3 and a couple of smartphones, one of them full HD.
Huawei is bonkers
The Chinese giant unveiled their 6.1-inch Ascend Mate. Do I need to say more? The Ascend D2 is less crazy but just as impressive.
LG and Samsung: yawn
It seems that the two Korean mammoths have decided to skip CES this year. LG was expected to reveal a little something called Optimus G2. Instead we got a new Google TV and some smart appliances.The same goes for Samsung – while we didn’t really believe we’ll see the Galaxy S4, a little action would’ve been nice. We at least found out that the Note 10.1 LTE is coming to Verizon soon.
Sony gets its superphone on
You may know it as the Yuga, but Sony kept its silly naming convention and dubbed its latest flagship the Xperia Z. The device is quite interesting, featuring specs that squarely position it at the top of the smartphone pyramid. Now, the question is, is this Sony’s promised superphone, or do the Japanese have something better in their labs that they save for later in the year?
Qualcomm messes with us
You know how Qualcomm SoCs were codenamed Snapdragons S3, S4, and S4 Pro? You probably awaited some news about Snapdragon S5… Well, Qualcomm begs to differ, so they changed their nomenclature and announced the new Snapdragon 600 and 800. Chip geeks can get their fix here.
