Samsung Galaxy S2 Plus unveiled; looks just like the S2, but adds Jelly Bean in the mix

Samsung started off this year’s CES rather quietly, not looking like it could have any major bombs to drop upon us Android enthusiasts. The only new device confirmed during the opening day of the Vegas trade show was the LTE-enabled GNote 10.1 for Verizon, while rumors about the Galaxy S4 received no kind of validation whatsoever.

But as the tech event advanced, Sammy certainly stepped things up, announcing the brand spanking new Exynos 5 Octa CPU with eight (!) cores. As expected, a more advanced prototype sporting the Youm flexible OLED display was also part of the Vegas show, but the biggest announcement of them all didn’t come until earlier today.
Everybody ready to be swept off his or hers feet? We present to you the Galaxy S2 Plus, the “evolved” version of the almost two-year old GS2. This new fellow comes with a blazing fast 1.2 GHz dual-core processor and an unbelievably sharp 4.3-inch WVGA Super AMOLED Plus display.
For those of you whose sarcasm alerts haven’t gone off yet, I’m just kidding with the “biggest announcement”, “blazing fast” CPU and so on. This S2 Plus feels like another dumb move a la Galaxy S3 Mini (probably even dumber), but hey, what do we know?

Maybe there really are people out there that needed an S2 lookalike with an ever so slightly improved spec sheet compared with what ultimately is an aging device. And maybe these people won’t mind seeing that “Plus” arbitrarily added to the name of a phone that’s by all means and purposes just a Jelly Bean-powered Galaxy S2.
I mean, maybe I’m missing something, but, as far as I remember, the original S2 came with the same 4.3-inch 800 x 480 pix res display, the same 1.2 GHz SoC, 1 GB of RAM, 1,650 mAh battery, Bluetooth 3.0, Wi-Fi, NFC and dual 8 MP/2 MP cameras. The S2 Plus even has 8 GB of on-board storage, compared with the 16 and 32 gigs of its predecessor, so if anything this is an S2 Minus after all.
But yeah, it’s true that Android 4.1.2 makes a big enough difference to call this one a (minor) upgrade. Then again, isn’t the first-gen S2 expected to get the bump to Jelly Bean any minute now?
All in all, this feels like a big oops for Samsung, but again, maybe I’m missing something. The S2 Plus doesn’t yet have any pricing and availability details attached to its name, so let’s wait and see those before bringing the heat on Sammy. Or not, however you prefer.
