At CES today Intel announced its new Intel Atom Lexington Z2420 chip for smartphones and tablets. The new chip is being targeted specifically at emerging markets across the globe.
As you can probably already guess based on its target market, the Intel Lexington chip doesn’t pack the same kind of punch as Medfield. That said, the chip is no pushover. In fact, the chip even supports dual shooters and has the ability to capture 1080p video at 30fps.

Intel is currently showing off a reference design that includes a 3.5-inch display with a 320×240 resolution, HSPA+ support, microSD and FM radio. Other specs include dual-SIM support, wireless sharing and a 1.2Ghz single-core Lexington processor with Hyper-Threading support.
The real icing on the cake is battery consumption. Traditionally speaking, Intel’s x86 processors have always been big power hogs when compared to ARM alternatives.
According to Intel, the Atom Z2420 has 18 percent better power consumption than Qualcomm’s current offerings. If their claims on power consumption are true, this is pretty big accomplishment on Intel’s part.
So what smartphone makers are working on Lexington-based devices? Intel confirms they are working with Lava, Acer and Safaricom on smartphones based on their current reference design.
What do you think, does Intel’s new Atom processor have what it takes to do well in emerging markets or not?
