As the implications of the Apple vs. Samsung verdict now take center stage, all eyes turned to Google to see what its response would be. Does the trial’s outcome mean Google is next in line for a court date with Apple? Both Apple and Samsung released statements about the $1.049 billion that the jury decided Samsung should pay Apple.
Naturally Apple was triumphant and Samsung was furious, but what about Google? The search engine giant took a while to compose itself before releasing a surprisingly short and gently-worded statement.
“The court of appeals will review both infringement and the validity of the patent claims. Most of these don’t relate to the core Android operating system, and several are being re-examined by the US Patent Office. The mobile industry is moving fast and all players — including newcomers — are building upon ideas that have been around for decades. We work with our partners to give consumers innovative and affordable products, and we don’t want anything to limit that.”So Google is basically saying it hopes that some of Apple’s patents won’t be upheld. If Apple can really lay claim to things like “pinch to zoom” and “double tap to zoom” along with “universal search” then Android could end up in the direct firing line. However, it seems ridiculous that Apple can block these features and demand they are removed from Android devices. Universal search in particular has surely been around for a long time? As Google points out, most of the industry is “building upon ideas that have been around for decades”.
Samsung was a lot more critical in its statement, but that has never really been Google’s style. This is definitely a clear indication that the fight will continue, though. There can be no doubt that Google will not bow down to Apple anytime soon.
