We were excited to see Acer planning to get serious about smartphones way back at the MWC in February, but unfortunately the company somehow managed to sabotage itself on the way. The CloudMobile S500 looked like a decently equipped and elegant handheld, but when you fail to advertise a product for months in a row, then suddenly bring it back into the spotlight, only to delay it without notice, there’s nothing that can save you.

The CloudMobile was supposed to start shipping in Europe around September 5, after being put up for pre-order in the UK a whole month ago. Now, a full week after that ETA, the 4.3-incher is still nowhere to be found, with the Expansys UK listing still stuck on pre-order status.
Although nothing seems to be certain at this point, Acer is finally getting ready for the CloudMobile launch (hopefully for real this time). Moreover, we now have the phone’s full spec sheet, from a user guide posted on the company’s official website.
We had bits and pieces of information about the handheld’s specs and features ever since February, but a couple of details were still kept under wraps. Now that the full spec sheet has been made public, we understand why Acer kept the secret in the first place.
The biggest disappointment is the CloudMobile’s 1,460 mAh Li-Ion battery, which is only slightly bigger than the 1,300 mAh unit powering the low-end Liquid Glow. We certainly didn’t expect Acer to challenge the Motorola Razr Maxx HD’s monster battery, but we would have at least hoped to get a 1,800 mAh powerpack.

The processor under the phone’s hood has been confirmed as a 1.5 GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 unit, but this is also not exactly what we expected, as it’s a MSM8260A unit. That’s the same CPU powering the HTC One S, but it’s not as snappy as the MSM8960 featured by the international One X and S3 or the Droid Razr HD. On the other hand, that might help out a bit with the battery problem, considering that it doesn’t drain as much “juice” as the MSM8960.
Thankfully, that’s also were the surprises end, with the rest of the confirmed specs fitting the speculations and rumors from last month. Those include the following:
  • 4.3-inch HD IPS capacitive multi-touch display with 1280 x 720 pixels resolution
  • 1 GB of RAM
  • 8 GB of internal memory
  • MicroSD support for expanding the storage with an additional 32 GB
  • 8 MP rear-facing camera with autofocus and LED flash
  • VGA front-facing camera
  • Android 4.0 ICS
  • Bluetooth 4.0
  • Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n
  • HSPA+/GPRS/EDGE
  • GPS and aGPS
  • NFC
  • 127 x 65.8 x 9.9 mm dimensions
As far as pricing goes, we only have the Expansys listing right now, which has the phone at 290 GBP (around $470). That sounds like a pretty hefty price tag, but we wouldn’t be surprised to see Acer put the CloudMobile up for grabs for considerably less at other retailers across Europe.
Anyone still interested in the CloudMobile? If so, what would be a fair price to ask for it?
