We reported on the revelation a while back that Apple will not be including a YouTube app in iOS 6, the new version of its mobile platform. YouTube was a default app, although Apple rarely updated it and didn’t support all content or ads. Apple’s licensing deal expired and it wasn’t really clear whether the decision was based on animosity from Apple’s side or Google’s discontent at missing out on potential revenue.
The new and improved YouTube app is out now in the App Store for the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad. It features ads that play before videos, but to sweeten that bitter pill you can now access thousands of music videos which were not viewable on the old app.
It also offers a smoother experience with voice search and query auto-complete to help you find the content you want. You can also subscribe to channels and access them easily by swiping to reveal your channel guide. Comments, related videos, and subtitles are accessible while you are viewing content. Finally, your sharing options have been boosted with Google+, Facebook and Twitter on the social media scene, and the ability to share via email or text message.
You can use the app on the iPad too, although it isn’t optimized for the larger screen (it just scales up). There will be a dedicated iPad version along soon. It does also support AirPlay which allows you to mirror your mobile device’s screen on your TV.
All in all things are looking up for YouTube fans with an iPhone.
