Technology is getting better all the time. There are cars that can drive themselves and glasses with a HUD. It’s a wonderful world we live in. However, when we all go home at night, we still use our old school keys to open our locks. That is so 4,000 years ago. Lockitron has released a product that will help update that technology.
The system is pretty cool. You buy the mount and the app from Lockitron. When it arrives, you install the mount over the deadbolt on the inside of your door. Once that’s finished, you can lock and unlock the door a variety of different ways. If you have an Android phone or an iPhone, there is an application that gives you control over it. If you are stuck with a dumb phone, you can set it to lock and unlock via text messaging.
If you have a dumb phone, that’s about as cool as it gets. For smart phone people, though, it gets a little bit better. NFC enabled phones might have an option for a NFC tag that will lock and unlock the door. Ostensibly, you could mount it anywhere and use it to lock and unlock your doors. Another potential method is using Bluetooth to unlock it. Sadly, this functionality is only for iPhone owners right now, but they’re working on making it Android compatible as well.
Lockitron sounds pretty good, but what problems does it have?
As with any new technology there are a few pitfalls. Lockitron locks connect to your home WiFi. So if you don’t have wireless internet at home you really can’t use it. If you have a power outage, you’re still mostly out of luck. Currently, the only way to use it with a power outage is via Bluetooth. As mentioned, only iPhones have that right now. If something goes awry, you’ll still have to use ye old skeleton key to unlock the door.Pitfalls aside, Lockitron really does have a cool piece of technology here. They are preparing to sell off their second wave of sales, as their first wave in March has sold out. At $149 per unit, it seems a little steep considering it’s essentially a glorified door mount. Sounds like a great idea...but I should hope the regular lock is a handy backup (what if the wifi goes down?!). Also, what do you need, just a password on your iphone? How easy is that to hack? Easier than picking a lock?!
