In today’s mobile universe, everything seems to revolve around personalization. So why should our mobile phone numbers be treated any different, given that they represent our most important contact detail? It turns out that they need not be limited to plain numbers, as Sprint has announced that customers can now replace their phone number with their nickname.
Obviously enough, going down that path should imply an extra level of attention in picking the personalized number. Avoiding the awkward situations I can imagine — but won’t discuss into further detail — should be a priority (getting this, chick6969?)!
What I will discuss, however, is the new service that Sprint rolled out today, one self explanatory named StarStar Me. As the name implies, Sprint subscribers can change their phone number into **nameofchoice. For instance, if I were a Sprint customer, I could tell you to contact me at **6453376622 (MikeFromAA), and that number will work from any major carrier in the US. Users can choose combinations of up to ten numbers, but you should really hurry up and get the basic ones such as **Mike or **Jesse before other Sprint customers do.
The StarStar Me service will cost you $2.99 extra each month, but it certainly is worth the extra cost if you’re in the habit of handing out your phone number multiple times each day. Once the StarStar Me account is set up, you’ll be able to set an automatic custom text response to your missed calls. Social media contact info will also be available from your StarStar account, meaning that it will somewhat become your new mobile ID that others can use to contact you.
As for the category of cell phone users targeted by Sprint’s StarStar Me service, Sprint’s VP of Product and Technology development Kevin McGinnis expects this to be popular among both personal and professional users:
“Sprint customers will be the first people to get StarStar Me. We expect this service to be especially popular with professionals, students and family customers, who can tailor its use to their individual preferences, lifestyles and interests with a few simple clicks.”If this seems like a good idea, you can get more information by dialing **63 (me) from any Sprint subscribed cellphone.
