The level of excitement brought by the rumor that Samsung and Google might be working together on a 2,560 x 1,600 pix res Nexus 10 tablet was at unprecedented heights for anyone who’s still dreaming of an Android-based “iPad killer,” but here comes the bad news.
Brooke Crothers from Cnet, the same “source” of that first report, now says that the 10.1-inch tab is “expected in the first half of next year.” That’s particularly disappointing because we’re pretty certain Samsung’s Galaxy S4 will come around February or March, which might push the Nexus 10’s launch to late May or early June.
However, the fourth-gen Apple iPad is also expected around March or April 2013, and the whole point of a Samsung-Google co-branded 10-inch tablet seemed to be undercutting a familiar enemy: the iPad 3.
Crothers speculates that the delay might come as a direct cause of the Nexus 10 being expected to boast an entirely new display and an Exynos 5 processor based on an ARM Cortex-A15 chip. Both these cutting-edge components already exist, but their getting ready for mass production might take a while.
It’s not all doom and gloom though for us Android enthusiasts, because we can now start to think at a new scenario. The LG Nexus 4 is just about confirmed as coming by the end of October 2012, and with a Nexus 10 possibly scheduled around June 2013, we can’t help but see some connections between the dates.
The Samsung Galaxy Nexus came in October 2011 with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, while the Nexus 7 tab came this June with 4.1 Jelly Bean. Catch the drift? This is of course a wild guess, but it only seems logical for Google to come out with an incremental update to Android, 4.2, upon the LG Nexus 4 launch, and with a whole new version, likely 5.0, next summer.
Are you excited about the possible releases of two Android upgrades in less than a year? Or disappointed that the Nexus 10′s release is so far down the road?
