There’s been a lot of fuss surrounding Sharp’s new IGZO (indium gallic zinc oxide) display technology in the last few months, mostly because of the rumors that Apple might use such panels in the manufacturing of the iPad 3 (proven false) and the iPad mini (still unconfirmed).
The first ever gadget to actually sport an IGZO display is a much less glamorous one, although it’s still worth a quick look. The Sharp Aquos Phone Zeta SH-02E has just been unveiled by NTT DoCoMo as part of the Japanese carrier’s fall line-up of smartphones, and, aside from the high-res low power screen, it also holds other aces up its sleeve.
There’s a whopping 16-megapixel camera on the back of the device, a 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 Pro quad-core processor under the hood, but also an Adreno 320 GPU, NFC support and LTE compatibility. Jelly Bean would have definitely been the cherry on top of such an impressive spec sheet, but for the time being Japanese tech users will have to make do with Android 4.0 ICS.
Yes, I did say only Japanese users, because unfortunately there’s a very good shot that the SH-02E, like pretty much all other Sharp Android phones around, will remain an Asian exclusive device.
Now about the IGZO panel… That’s a humongous 4.9-incher with a 1,280 x 720 pixels resolution that looks decent at a first glance, but not impressive, according to The Verge. The online publication has had a chance to take the phone for a quick spin already and, while they are reporting “impressive power efficiency”, the 300 ppi pixel density is more or less run of the mill.
Still, the phone as a whole looks darn beautiful and snappy, which is why it’s such a pity that Sharp is still not a household name in the global mobile industry. Don’t you agree?
