We’d forgive you for not even being aware that Dell had released Android phones, as the only news from the company involving Android lately has been tablet related. Even then, there hasn’t been much to speak of. Apparently, Dell realizes this too, as they confirmed at this year’s Dell World conference that they’re dropping smartphones and Android altogether.

Head of Dell’s consumer business, Jeff Clarke, elaborated on the company’s decision during an interview with Forbes, saying that “It’s a content play with Android. Amazon is selling books and Google is making it up with search. So far we couldn’t find a way to build a business on Android.”

So what is Dell going to focus on now? Tablets and computers running Windows, it seems. Dell isn’t alone here, with HP CEO Meg Whitman recently saying that the company would likely look to Windows for future tablets. With neither HP nor Dell being the household names they once were, the decision to leave Android behind not be the best decision for either company in the long run.
MarketsandMarkets expects the smartphone market to reach $150.3 billion in 2014, so Dell’s decision to jump off the boat may not come at the most opportune of times. It seems that Clarke may be aware of this, telling Forbes that this recent move “doesn’t mean we’re not looking at Android. You should come and see what’s in our labs.”
What do you think of Dell’s decision to ditch Android? What do you think it would take for the company to regain the relevance that it once had?
