Though HTC and Sprint have always been reluctant to talk about the timing of the Android 4.1 upgrade for the EVO 4G LTE, we’ve suspected for a while this was due before Christmas. Our hunch seemed to turn into reality about a month ago, but unfortunately that proved to be just another unsubstantiated rumor.
Now however we’re 99% certain Jelly Bean is rolling out to the EVO 4G LTE, based on a leak, but also on a mention on Sprint’s website. First, let’s see about the leak.
That very clearly showed an internal Sprint doc saying EVO 4G LTE’s update to 3.15.651.16 will be “customer initiated” on December 13 (today). Of course, we had no way to know the picture was legit, but it looked like a much too elaborate hoax to us.
There was plenty of info in the doc, a lot more than in the one “leaked” back in November, not to mention the link to DARA, an internal Sprint web portal or the new software’s build number, which checked out. As for the actual information, you could see a pretty thorough list of enhancements and fixes there , as well as a couple of updating tips.
The “changelog” included the actual bump to Android 4.1 and HTC Sense 4+, but also a few mentions of specific bug fixes and enhancements, like improved camera capabilities, Wi-Fi Authentication and Calendar Reminder.
Not included in that list of new features were all the Jelly Bean-exclusive treats, but fear not, because Google Now is definitely coming, as well as Gesture Mode, expandable notifications and so on and so forth.
But if there was still anyone that doubted this leak’s accuracy, Sprint very quietly and unsuspectingly changed EVO 4G LTE’s listing on the company’s website. The device is now said to be coming with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean out of the box, which can only mean one thing – JB is in fact rolling out to the EVO as we speak.
Of course, there’s still a chance this listing is an unfortunate typo and the leak is fake, but that sounds like a sci-fi scenario that not even Spielberg would touch.
What we’d like now is for you EVO 4G LTE users out there to lend us a hand in getting to the bottom of this and turn that 99% chance of Sprint updating the phone to JB to 100%. So, did any of you get an automatic prompt message encouraging you to download and install a tasty new software pack? How about if you perform a manual check for updates – does that help?
