Once upon a time, when life was simpler and Apple and Samsung weren’t at each other’s throats all day, you could have easily broken down Sammy’s smartphones into three categories: entry-level, mid-range and high-end.
But somewhere along the way things started to get tangled, lines started to be crossed and niches jumbled. The Galaxy no longer contains just elements from the three classes, but also bizarre species like the S3 Mini or Premier, which don’t exactly fit into one category.
The bad news – if you think you’re confused now, wait ‘till you see the S2 Plus around. Remember the S2 Plus? Yup, that 4.3-incher that got leaked a couple of times, but that still felt like an ugly prank. Well, it seems that it’s no joke and its release is still on.
Going by the GT-I9105P model number, the handheld has been spotted getting certification from China’s own “FCC”, meaning earlier rumors about a January 2013 launch could have been spot-on. The 4.3-incher was seen sporting the same display as before (an 800 x 480 pix res one), but get this – the 1.2 GHz dual-core CPU has been downgraded some more and is now clocked to 1 GHz.
To make matters even worse, SamMobile is reporting that, according to “insiders”, the S2 Plus will only be available in an 8 GB version. But if that’s the case, how is this a “Plus” version of a phone packing a 1.2 GHz processor and 16 or 32 GB of storage? Beats me and the sole running of Android 4.1 Jelly Bean is surely not a satisfactory answer. After all, the original S2 could well get the JB bump before the Plus will hit the market.
Talking about markets, it is rumored that the S2 Plus will be a “global” phone, though we really, really think that refers to Asia and Europe. I mean, come on, who would ever touch this in the States?
Before wrapping up, let’s recap some of the other rumored specs and features of this “bad boy”. Thought to weigh in at 121 grams, it could be released in “Chic White” and “Dark Blue” sometime between mid-January and mid-February.
We’ll probably see an 8 MP shooter slapped on the device’s back, while the front-facing cam is set to boast 2 megapixels. The 1,650 mAh battery, while modest, should be enough to handle the mediocre CPU and meager display’s power hunger and that’s about all we know right now.
Is it just us or could Samsung be losing its mojo?
