Toshiba has just announced plans to introduce a 20MP CMOS image sensor to be featured on its latest line of digital cameras. Currently, the biggest challenge in producing compact digital cameras is getting the resolution up to 10-16MP. If Toshiba is able to get these sensors mass-produced and on the majority of their compact cameras, they will have a significant advantage over the competition.
Toshiba’s latest sensor, the TCM5115CL, will claim to be the highest resolution in the 1/2.3in optical format. This sensor will also utilize backside illumination technology (BSI) in an attempt to further push the standard of technology in camera sensors. The company is also boasting that the sensor’s full-well capacity will be improved by 15%. The full-well capacity is a measurement of the amount of charge that an individual pixel can hold before it saturates.
The sensor is also designed to increase the video-recording quality of the camera as well. The sensor will support slower motion playback and be able to record video at 60fps at 1080p, while recording at 100fps at 720p. The sensor will be released for sampling at the end of this month, and is due for mass production in August.
Anyone looking forward to see such 20MP cameras on their future Android smartphones?
