LG may have had a big year in 2012, with the release of the Optimus 4X HD, the Optimus G, and the Nexus 4, but they still have done nothing to get rid of their tarnished reputation when it comes to OS updates. Apart from the Nexus 4, even the company’s high-end models are still stuck on Android 4.0, with their mid-range devices still running Android 2.3 Gingerbread.
Well, after a long wait, if you’ve had reason to hold on to your LG Optimus Black, we have some good news for you! After an announcement back in August last year that the Optimus Black would be receiving an official update to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, the rollout has finally reached the shores of India. The update, which takes the OS version to Android 4.0.4, is currently available from the LG Mobile Support Tool. We have no indication yet as to whether the update will eventually be available OTA, or will only be possible via the desktop tool. The upgrade to Android 4.0 will introduce standard ICS features such as folders, smoother multi-tasking, and faster performance, along with some UI enhancements from LG including updated gesture features, smoother boot animation, and the availability of the LG Quick Memo app.
The LG Optimus Black is quite a popular phone in India even though it was released almost two years ago. The low-cost of the device, and the fact that it is from an internationally-renowned manufacturer have gone a long way in keeping the device relevant in the eyes of consumers, and the availability of the Android 4.0 ICS update will make things even better! It feels like I’ve been saying a lot of “it’s better late than never” when it comes to OS update cycles of OEMs, but as long as it happens eventually, the wait is certainly worth it.
