Unveiled a couple of weeks ago, the Sony Xperia SP is a little less impressive than its Z and ZL cousins, but still fairly intriguing for those of you looking to save a buck and not sacrifice too much. Due out on Carphone Warehouse UK this month, the 4.6-incher is apparently headed to O2 and Three as well.
The two British carriers have earlier today announced the Xperia SP will be going for sale “soon” without revealing much else. That means the exact release dates and price points are still big mysteries, but, unless Three and O2 plan to shock us, the SP should be available in two to three weeks starting for free with contracts.
The “Pay as you go” pricing is a little harder to crack, but our guesstimate is £300, £350 max, given the SIM-free SP is to cost €399 in Italy and the Netherlands and €20 extra in Germany.
Based on existent press materials and online listings, O2 and Three will probably sell the black and white versions of the Xperia SP at first, with the snazzy red model coming a little later. As for specs, they’re the same all-around, with highlights including a beautiful 1,280 x 720 pixels resolution display and a speedy dual-core 1.7 GHz Snapdragon S4 Pro CPU.
There’s a lot of marketing focus on SP’s design, which is similar to the premium looks of the Z and ZL. The aluminum frame is elegant and solid, the profile is fairly thin (9.98 mm) considering the massive 2,370 mAh battery inside, while the most obvious distinctive element between this and its cousins is the illuminated transparent strip at the bottom.
The 8 MP rear-facing camera is no pushover either and the Xperia SP is 4G-ready, meaning the thing will connect to the web crazy fast once O2 and Three will roll out their new LTE networks.
