With Samsung ruling everything, it’s started being more difficult than ever to find an Android niche where the Koreans are not among the stars. But when there aren’t any more niches to attack, why not invent a new one?

How about clamshell quad-core phones? That might sound like a bizarre idea with not many chances of success, but how can you know something is not right until you’ve tried it?
The SCH-W2013 has been uncovered getting certified by Chinese authorities, and, judging by its name, it should become the world’s first ever clamshell quad-core device sometime next year. We’re guessing not very late in 2013 however, considering both the regulatory approval and the set of photos leaked.
Now I know that most of you will find W2013’s design tacky or even fugly, but wait till you hear about its specs. Aside from a quad-core 1.4 GHz Exynos 4412 CPU, this outcast is also rumored to come with 2 GB of RAM, and dual 8 MP/2 MP cameras.
The out of the box OS is thought to be Android 4.0 ICS, although things might change by the time of the phone’s release, while the Achilles’ heel will probably be the WVGA 800 x 480 pixels resolution of the 3.3-inch AMOLED display. Then again, we don’t see how Samsung could have crammed more pixels in such a tiny screen or how it could have made the panel bigger when the “clam” also includes a 3.3-inch lower body with a physical keyboard.
The rest of the features “known” right now are much more standard and include Wi-Fi a/b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0, and microSD support. The massive two-part body will make the W2013 weigh in at 186 grams, while the thickness doesn’t sound very encouraging either, at a full 17 mm.
So, what do you guys think? Innovative or downright weird? Cool or ugly as heck?
