Rumors emerged recently about Samsung considering a switch to LCD technology for its top of the line smartphones, due to the limited resolution that AMOLED displays can achieve.
According to a ZDNet Korea report, Samsung would have trouble manufacturing full HD (1920 x 1080) AMOLED displays, which prompted the Korean conglomerate to consider using LCD panels, which don’t suffer from the same limitations.
The local rivals from LG Display, as well as Japan Display (a consortium between Sony, Hitachi, and Toshiba) have recently showed off previews of full HD panels.
Now, DDaily.co.kr claims that Samsung Electronics was courted by Japan Display, which offered samples of its 5-inch full HD LCD panels, but SE preferred to stick with using AMOLED displays provided by its sister company Samsung Display.
After considering elements like price, yield rates, and production capabilities, Samsung Electronics decided that it can continue fitting its flagship smartphones with AMOLED screens. To ensure the required production capacity, Samsung Display will use a modified version of its FMM (fine metal mask) manufacturing process.
The perspective of 1920 x 1080 AMOLED displays is mouthwatering. On the flip side, if Samsung Display will face problems in ramping up the production, it might cause delays or setbacks in the release of next year’s Galaxy S4 and Galaxy Note 3.
Would you prefer a full HD display over a similar AMOLED one?
