With Samsung, HTC and Sony reportedly hard at work on their 2013 flagship smartphones, it was only a matter of time until LG’s next top-tier device made its own shiny appearance in the news. Now Optimus G’s successor has been spotted in GlBenchmark’s database, though we welcome it with mostly mixed feelings.
Don’t get us wrong, there’s nothing about E940’s leaked spec sheet that disappoints, it’s just we’ve seen it all before. And even worse, we’ve seen it at released devices, like HTC’s Droid DNA, and not just at yet to be launched phones, like Sony’s Odin.
We’re talking of course about the 1920 x 1080 pixels resolution display, the 1.5 GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro APQ8064 CPU, the 2 GB of RAM, the Adreno 320 GPU and the running of Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.
Thankfully, everything else about the E940 is still kept under wraps, which can make us hope we’re going to see at least one or two unique features. The display size is unknown – 5-inch is definitely in the cards – while the battery capacity, cameras, on-board storage and the existence or lack thereof of a microSD card slot are all subject to speculation and fantasy right now.
Furthermore, this was only a test unit put through GLBenchmark, so even the “on board” Android 4.1 can be bumped to 4.2 by the time of the launch. Talking about launch, let’s say we have no idea when it could take place, but LG can certainly not afford to keep this big guy in the pipeline much longer – after all, there’s only a small step from “we’ve seen it all before” to “we’ve seen better before”.
Two other details worth mentioning about the E940 before wrapping this report up. First off, based on the Android OS build display section of the GLBenchmark doc, this is definitely coming to AT&T in the States. Whether or not the carrier will get exclusivity is unclear, but Ma Bell is in the cards at least for launching this “beast” earlier than the competition.
Secondly, we can’t ignore the striking similarities between the E940 and the previously leaked F240K. The two phones appear to have identical spec sheets, so we can only assume one thing – they are the same device, one heading to Korea in January and one to the US in February or March.
So, how about that E940? Could it be too small of an upgrade to the Optimus G? Will it be able to compete with Samsung’s Galaxy S4, HTC’s M7 and Sony’s Odin and Yuga?
