Sphero, the smartphone-controlled robotic balls, recently danced their way across NYC to the tunes of Trans-Siberian Orchestra’s “Christmas Eve / Sarajevo”. There were 28 Sphero balls in Union Square controlled by four Android smartphones that presented the superbly choreographed light and dance show. The programmable robotic balls were synchronized together to perform the dance routine.
Though it was a move by some enthusiastic Android users to test what could be done with these balls, it can easily be termed as the most innovative light show of the year. The so called robotic ball is an Orbotix Smart Robot housed inside a protective shell that is even waterproof. It requires a device running at least iOS 4.0 or Android 2.2 to function.
Other features such as cable free induction charging, a Bluetooth range of more than 50 feet and speeds of up to 3 feet per second have already made the device a favorite among buyers. Furthermore, there are more than 20 apps now available for Sphero in the Apple’s App Store and Google Play Store.
