We already know that the release date for Ubuntu mobile OS is set sometime in late February. Today, Canonical has at last marked a specific date, February 21, as the moment when its Touch Developer Preview of Ubuntu will have its images and open source code finally available to test on Galaxy Nexus and Nexus 4 smartphones.
Average Nexus phone owners, however, must know that this release is intended for developers and daredevils who have no qualm in installing the custom software on their device. The point, after all, is for developers to familiarize themselves with the new operating system so as to create suitable apps.
Users will find tools for flashing phones in the Ubuntu archives on the same day to ensure that their Touch Developer Preview is updated with the most recent version. On the other hand, Canonical representatives will be present during the 2013 Mobile World Congress to offer flashing the phone themselves while also showcasing Ubuntu on other devices.
According to Pat McGowan, who heads the integration effort that created the forthcoming images, the Ubuntu OS “supports a wide range of screen sizes and resolutions. Developers who have experience bringing up phone environments will find it relatively easy to port Ubuntu to current handsets.”
Canonical then expects that the complete and final version of Ubuntu for phones will offer true convergence between multiple devices such as tablets, desktop computers, and HDTVs. Ubuntu 13.10, whose October release happens to coincide with the arrival of the Ubuntu smartphone, is planned to include a “complete entry-level smartphone experience.”
Head to the Canonical source link for more information such as specific installation guides and where to download the Preview SDK. In the meantime, those without the aforementioned Nexus smartphones can make do with a sneak peak to the mobile OS’s quick apps menu.
