Some of you may have silently wept as news emerged that Huawei was coming out with its proprietary user interface to run atop Google’s stock launcher. While the name Emotion UI has become more familiar ever since, not too many have seen its real life implementation.

The Verge has had some quality time with the Huawei P1, which we all know comes with Emotion UI. Here’s a brief walkthrough of Huawei’s first take on Android skin.
Starting with the most drastic part of the UI — when compared to the stock experience – Huawei has removed the ubiquitous app drawer from the home screen, which makes all your apps visible on the phone’s home screen. If you want to add widget(s) to the screen, you have to long tap the wallpaper instead.
Our main concern is for folks who like to download and install apps by the dozens, as it may not be such an intuitive experience to scroll through so many home screens. They are apparently limited to only nine, though.
Another highlight of the Emotion UI is one that’s usually found on your old feature phone, a profile changing feature. Huawei has added some preset profiles to meet certain situations for when you’re driving, going to a meeting, and others – and you can switch from one profile to the next easily using a radial menu.

The Emotion UI also comes with “Me Widget”, which allows you to group a number of different widgets, and “smart triggers”. The latter is promised to come to the final version of the UI.
With Huawei pumping out more Android devices with better specs, it’s only to be expected that the Chinese would want to flex it software muscle as well, in order to separate their offerings from generic Android devices on the market. Let us know what you think of Huawei’s Emotion UI below.
