With the popularity of mobile devices and mobile broadband, users will usually crave for content to be available whenever, whenever. But with the myriad of devices you use — smartphone, tablet, ebook reader, notebook computer and even desktop — you will sometimes get lost in terms of what you’ve been doing when you switch devices.
Amazon wants to change this by bringing its Whispersync technology to more devices. This is the same technology that lets you synchronize bookmarks, reading progress and other information across devices. With Whispersync, for instance, you can stop reading an ebook from your Kindle at a certain page and you can pick up right where you left on your smartphone.
But now with the latest update, Whispersync is now available to Voice and Games. With Whispersync for Voice you can stuff your Kindle into your bag, ride your car, and continue listening to the audio version of your book via Audible. This also includes “Immersion Reading,” in which you can listen to your audiobook while your Kindle highlights the text in sync.
This requires the use of Audible’s mobile app for Android and iOS. Amazon has yet to provide more details, particularly whether users will have to purchase both e-book and audiobook versions of titles, although it’s possible that Whispersync for Voice will mean buyers get deals for bundled text+voice versions.
Meanwhile, Amazon’s Whispersync for Games lets developers synchronize game data across different devices. This way, we users no longer need to restart a game when we switch across different devices — tablet, smartphone or desktop. This is great news for early adopters who often upgrade to the latest gadget every so often. You won’t have to start your game from square one. Whispersync offers cloud-based meta-data syncing so users have better data portability.
