App Update Roundup: LinkedIn, Pocket, and WordPress

Popular apps LinkedIn, Pocket, and WordPress have each received some important updates in the last few days, so here’s the run down of what’s been fixed and what’s brand new.

LinkedIn

We’ll start with LinkedIn, which, after 2 whole years without an update, has received a pretty massive overhaul, including a totally new interface and a selection of new features.


The new user interface probably most obvious upgrade, which finally brings LinkedIn’s look up to date with the modern world; everything looks much more sleek and professional. On top of that, the activity steam is now much more interactive, allowing users to invite, follow, like, share and comment on content right from the updates stream.
LinkedIn now also supports swipe gestures; for example a quick swipe from the left side of the screen will bring up a menu of options, granting you quick access to private messages, connection invitations, calendars, and more.

Pocket

One year on from the re-branded launch of Pocket, the developers are celebrating by bringing a host of new features to its article saving app.

For starters there’s a collection of bug fixes and stability improvements that should keep this already excellent app even more stable. The instant sync feature has been improved to work with multiple devices and the app will now automatically full screen your pages in Article or Web View modes.
For sharing convenience the update has also added the ability to share content directly with your Pocket-using friends, whereby they’ll receive an instant push notification from their Pocket app as well as an email or alert from your preferred method of sharing. To accompany this there’s also a new share menu that displays the services and friends that you’ve most recently shared content with.
These are slight but welcome adjustments to one of Android most popular apps. Pocket it’s certainly worth downloading if you haven’t done so already.

WordPress

And finally, yesterday WordPress released the Version 2.3 update for its Android app on the Google Play Store. Just like LinkedIn, this update brings with it an improved user interface and introduces several new features and tweaks.

Firstly, the old-style dashboard interface has been replaced with the new “Menu Drawer” which aims to make navigating quicker and easier than ever before. All of the old functionality remains, but the Menu Drawer also adds a few new options, such as the ability to instantly click “view site”. For tablets the update takes advantage of the larger screen size by keeping the new menu permanently visible.
The UI upgrade also includes the “Action Bar”, which provides instant access to common actions such as creating a new post, refreshing content, and sharing.
To round off Version 2.3, WordPress has also tackled a few niggling problems. If the app encounters an error whilst uploading an image it will no longer publish the post, instead it will simple be moved to draft where you can correct the problem. The app also takes advantage of caching, allowing it to load that little bit faster, and the post editor has received an expandable content area to improve navigation whilst editing.
