Asus to launch the Padfone 2 on October 16

Releasing an innovative device alone won’t necessarily translate into great sales, as there are other variables involved to propel it into sales stardom – something that the Asus Padfone is clearly lacking. Since the first iteration has failed to convince more people to reach for their wallet, Asus is hoping that the market will be much kinder the second time around.

The Asus Padfone 2, which has been talked about since May, will finally come out from its secret hiding place next month.

NotebookItalia has received invitation from Asus Italy to attend the official unveiling of Asus Padfone 2 on October 16, 2012 in Milan. We could be seeing a simultaneous launch event – in Milan and Taipei – judging from the information on the invitation.
So what can we look forward to on the next iteration of the Padfone? We know that the hardware is due for an upgrade, but that’s a given necessity. While it hasn’t been confirmed, the Padfone 2 may sport a quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro CPU clocked at 1.5GHz, as well as a gig of RAM – thanks to the leaked benchmark of the device yesterday. Oh, it apparently also still sports Ice Cream Sandwich.
We do hope that Asus will learn a thing or two from the recent success of the Nexus 7 tablet, which it helped build. Not that we’re expecting Asus to follow the same sub-$200 pricing route for the Padfone 2, but making it more affordable will certainly be appreciated by customers. Also, adding some jelly beans won’t hurt either.
