Today, Google announced via its official blog that soon Google Play and YouTube will be offering more movies and TV shows from Twentieth Century Fox, over 600 titles in all.
The television shows mentioned include Family Guy, Glee, Modern Family and New Girl, while X-men, Ice Age, and Black Swan are some of the movies that will be coming to Google’s Services. The new release Prometheus is available in HD quality today, three weeks ahead of its release on DVD and Blu-Ray. Though the movie does not appear in a search of the Play Store at the time of this writing, it is available via direct link.
Titles will only be available in the U.S. to start, as is par for the course, though Google states that it plans to bring them to more countries soon. Google mentions in the blog that “We’re now working with all six of the major film studios and many independent studios to bring you the best new releases and your favorite classics to rent or own.”
This is a move that many would see as an absolute necessity for Google if they plan to compete against Amazon and other companies for selling and renting media on Android devices. While Google isn’t alone in seeing early releases from Fox, having the content available at the same time as their competitors is vital.
