Ruggedized Handheld Nautiz X1 phone is “built to survive”, but also to empty your pockets

We’ve become accustomed with new gadgets claiming they are the thinnest, lightest or most powerful around lately, but one race we haven’t seen many competitors for is the one for the title of “toughest smartphone in the world”.

Swedish-based Handheld is preparing to make a push for that title however, with the bulletproof Nautiz X1. Nah, we’re messing with you, it’s not bulletproof, although it might as well be, having IP67 certification and 810G military standard compliance.
That means you can drop, hit, bump, bang or knock this little guy around, and you’ll still end up with a fully functional, scratch-free and fairly elegant phone. The Nautiz X1 can also withstand low temperatures, sand, dust, water and humidity, so you can take it with your from Alaska to the Sahara desert. And all that in a “package” weighing in at 180 grams (less than a Nokia Lumia 920, for example), and measuring 15 mm in thickness. Not too shabby, don’t you think?
Handheld doesn’t seem to have put the same amount of work into the phone’s internals as it has into its exterior, so the Nautiz X1 is certainly not what you would call a high-ender. There’s a 1GHz dual-core TI OMAP 4430 CPU powering the device, as well as 512MB of RAM, 2GB of on-board storage, and a microSD card slot.
The 4-inch touchscreen is also fairly mediocre in terms of resolution (only 800 x 480 pixels), but it does come with a sunlight-readable surface, which is not a feature you can easily found on smartphones these days.

Another interesting and rather unique function is Windows Embedded Handheld 6.5 compatibility right out of the box besides Android 4.0 ICS. We’re not exactly sure if the Nautiz X1 allows dual booting or if you have to make the choice between the two operating systems upfront, but it’s still nice to see someone coming with something original for a change.
Original is also the inclusion of an extra 2,920mAh Li-Ion battery aside from the standard 1,530mAh unit, although the behemoth battery is optional and will require you to pay up some more dough. Other more run-of-the-mill features include a 5MP rear-facing camera with autofocus and LED Flash, micro USB 2.0, Bluetooth, WiFi 802.11 b/g/n, G-Sensor, and E-Compass.
Handheld’s Nautiz X1 “built to survive” phone is already up for pre-orders, but before making any plans for the Third World War, the Zombie Invasion or a trip to the North Pole, you’ll have to probably win the lottery to afford spending $900 on the phone. Not to mention the X1 will not start shipping until January 2013, when even the last shred of enthusiasm you might have over the device’s toughness will certainly be blown to pieces.
