T-Mobile and Huawei’s myTouch and myTouch Q phones might have passed unobserved by many at the time of their respective releases more than a month ago. But one major software glitch made the two handhelds get under the spotlight for all the wrong reasons soon after.

Besides releasing the two mid-rangers with Android 2.3 Gingerbread on board — which was itself a major disappointment — Huawei and T-Mo also messed up the rear-facing shooters. The cameras, advertised as equipped with 5 MP sensors, were only capable of shooting 3.9 MP pics in reality due to a software bug forcing the cropping of the images by default.
If that wasn’t enough to piss off early adopters of the myTouch and myTouch Q, Huawei and T-Mobile’s silence on the matter was even more infuriating. Fortunately, the phones’ manufacturer and the carrier did listen to the frustration of users and decided to respond not with words, but with action.
It did take a while for a software update to be pushed to the two phones, but starting today the mid-rangers are treated with a new OTA (over-the-air) package to “improve device performance and stability.”

The upgrade leaves the handhelds stuck with Android 2.3.6, but ups the devices to build number C85B839SP03. The changelog is not massive, but I’m sure the promise of the camera’s optimization to “realize full 5.0 Mega Pixel resolution” is what most users are craving for.
Although it’s definitely not as major as the camera fix, there’s one other new function that might interest you and make your life easier: the possibility of opting out of the pre-loaded Carrier IQ tracking software. Other than that, there are also “additional bug fixes related to call functions” that you may or may not notice, as well as a “Compose Icon” function added to the Email application.
The software update weighing in at 80 MB should have already reached handsets automatically, but if you’ve failed to receive a prompt message to install it, be sure to check for a better network connection, and then head to Settings, About Phone, then Software Update. If there’s no update there either waiting for your manual approval, give it a couple more days, because sometimes it takes a while for these software packages to reach all users.
Is there anyone out there who’s flashed the update and tested the camera? If so, can you notice any improvements to the quality of the pics?
