The idea of getting a computer for just $35 is beyond amazing, but that’s what you get with the Rapsberry Pi. Sure, it’s not the fastest computing solution, but it’s hard to complain when you consider its size and pricing. Even better, developers are hard at work on a port of Android 4.0 that will eventually work with this mini-PC.

The Raspberry Pi is designed as a tinkering device and for educational purposes, though it is also quite useful for things like media playing and light gaming. As an owner of a Raspberry Pi board myself, I can’t sing enough praises to it and feel that its really worth the money for a true ‘geek’ at heart.
That being said, Raspberry Pi is about to get even better thanks to a new “Turbo Mode”. The new overclocking method is supported by the Raspberry Pi Foundation and won’t void your warranty. With the Turbo Mode the Pi’s performance can get a boost of about 50 percent. This means speeds of up to 1GHz with the Pi, and the Benchmark results show that the Pi truly becomes much snappier and responsive.
How do you overclock the Raspberry Pi? All it takes is a simple firmware update, which also includes improved USB performance, support for WIFI dongles out of the box and better analog audio.
There is a catch, though. Not all versions of the Pi board can handle 1GHz overclocking speeds. Some models are older and for some reason don’t play nice with the 1GHz boost. How do you know? The only way you can know is to give it a try.
If the overclocked speed doesn’t work right with your Raspberry Pi, don’t worry. You just need to press and hold the shift key while booting up. This will override the Raspberry Pi overclocked speed and give you the chance to set it back down.
Do you own a Raspberry Pi with the new firmware update? Did you have success with reaching 1GHz speeds?
