When Adobe Flash said its goodbye to Android last month, the effect was felt by third-party apps like BBC’s, that relied on the ubiquitous player to stream contents to Android devices from its website. With Flash gone from popular devices like the Google Nexus 7 tablet, which doesn’t support it, BBC has decided to develop its own media player that removes the Flash dependency.
The new app, called BBC Media Player, has been released on Google Play, and it will become the de facto video and audio player when you browse the BBC website on your Android phones and tablets. The company’s Executive Product Manager for POD Mobile Management, Chris Yanda, said that the BBC Media Player is meant to be a media playback solution that will work with on devices running Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, as well as older versions of the OS.
BBC is also planning to release an updated version of its iPlayer Android app. The new Flash-free version of the app should be available in the coming days, and it’s definitely something to look forward to for fans of the network.
Since the BBC Media Player app is fairly new, it’s understandable that it still has some shortcomings. For instance, users are complaining about the quality of the video. This is hopefully something that BBC will address in the next iteration.
How’s your experience with the app so far? Let us know in the comments below.
