Google’s Nexus 7, the affordable Android 4.1 Jelly Bean device we think gives the iPad a serious run for its money, is coming to Japan. According to The Verge, who was at a press event in Tokyo, customers in Japan will be able to buy the Nexus 7 from the Google Play Store today, and then one week later, on October 2nd, they’ll be able to pick one up from several local electronics store chains. Only one model will be available, the 16 GB variant, and it’s going to run roughly $254, which is about a Starbucks cup of coffee more than what it’s being sold for in America.
Eric Schmidt, who was at the press event, says that 75% of people who use the Google Play Store in Japan actually purchase content with it, making Japan the number one purchaser, proportionally that is, of digital goods. It’s no surprise to hear that of course, Japan has been on the bleeding edge of mobile business models for years now. They’ve had NFC on their phones since the turn of the century, and they’ve been scanning QR codes for what feels like forever.
If you’re thinking about buying a Nexus 7 for yourself, but have been on the fence about it, let’s make this crystal clear for you: It’s an incredible device, but, and this is a big but, you can’t use it without being connected to a WiFi network. There are rumors going around the internets that suggest Google is going to launch a cellular enabled Nexus 7 in October, and that actually makes a lot of sense when you think about it. The Samsung Galaxy Nexus was announced in mid-October 2011, which means it’s going to turn a year old pretty soon, which in turn means it’s time for Google to host another press conference to announce new Nexus hardware and a spiffy new version of Android!
