Google has certainly shown that its map technology is infinitely superior to Apple’s. That hasn’t stopped it from adding more and more features to Google Maps. After it expanded live traffic reports to more cities and added over one million transit stops worldwide, now Google lets users swim with the fish, albeit virtually.
As announced on its blog, you can abandon your scuba gear and feed your Little Mermaid obsession by exploring the vast ocean with Google Maps.
Understandably, the company hasn’t mapped the whole ocean floor just yet, but what it does now is nothing short of amazing. You can “follow a manta ray and experience the reef at sunset” in Australia’s Great Barrier Reef. Going further north, Apo Island, a volcanic island and marine reserve in the Philippines awaits you. And as for some Hawaii love, you can marvel at the panoramic views of Oahu’s Hanauma Bay and Maui’s Molokini crater.
The brief video partly reveals the behind-the-screen process of how Google, working with The Caitlin Seaview Survey, was able to capture the stunning images and present them to marine lovers all over the globe through Google Maps.
