When it was announced that Texas Instruments would stop making mobile chips, we didn’t know what to expect. We knew that the TI OMAP5 was on the way and the announcement to leave the mobile industry left a lot of open questions. Texas Instruments came forward quickly to answer those questions.
A TI rep told GSM Arena that they weren’t leaving the mobile industry. At least not yet. The TI OMAP5 is still slated for production in early 2013.

This is exciting news. The TI OMAP5 features so far have been very promising. The dual core Cortex-A15 chip, with two additional M4 cores, should make quite the splash when it’s prepared for release. It has already shown that it has better performance than both the Tegra 3 quad core and the Apple A5X.

Is Texas Instruments giving up mobile after the TI OMAP5?

According to TI, not exactly. The report stating they were on their out was not entirely true. It may not be entirely false, either. They are actually expanding to other areas, including automotive, industrial, enterprise communication, vision and robotics industries. This is to help extend themselves into non-mobile territory. The future isn’t 100% known, but for the time being, Texas Instruments is still doing mobile technology as of right now.
The market for mobile processors has been rough. There are at least three other big manufacturers pumping out chips that Texas Instruments has to compete with. Some of them offer features like embedded LTE support, which lowers manufacturing costs. That makes competition for Texas Instruments a little bit harder.
However, the more options there are out there to consumers, the better. It drives up competition, keeps costs lower, and prevents monopolies. So it’s a good thing that Texas Instruments decided to stick with it.
