Today Google has launched its “Google Shopping Express” same-day delivery service, working with retailers like Target, Office Depot, Staples, and several others in order to compete with online-retail leader Amazon. The service is now live in the San Francisco Bay Area after having undergone months of internal testing from employees. Residents south of the city from San Mateo to San Jose will have access to this limited launch.
By working closely with local delivery companies and businesses, Google aims to deliver all sorts of goods from local retailers directly to shopper’s home around the area.
If you’re living in the San Francisco Bay Area then you can sign up for six months of free delivery of online goods placed with selected retailers in the area. Eventually Google does plan to charge for this service, we’ve heard that it could cost around £65, but exact pricing details haven’t been decided on quite yet.
It’s interesting that Google should try and move into the already over-crowded delivery business, but we have seen a of number signs over the past year indicating that Google is definitely interested in ramping-up its e-commerce operations. Perhaps the focus on connecting local businesses to local consumers will give Google an edge over broader competitors like Amazon, but it seems like an unbelievably complicated logistical task if it ever wants to roll out a program like this nationwide.
If you live in the area then please let us know any experiences you have with Google Shopping Express. If you live elsewhere, how would you feel about using Google for your local delivery needs?
