We’ve heard many reports over the past week about Google’s upcoming unified chat service and some screenshots leaked which were unfortunately fake. Now thanks to some trusted sources, “Babble” will actually be named “Babel”. This name could just be internally and the new messenger service will work seamlessly across Chrome, Google+, Gmail, Android, and iOS.
Google Voice wasn’t mentioned, but we shouldn’t count it out completely. Here are the features that Google is touting:
- Access the same conversation list from anywhere
- A new, conversation-based UI
- Advanced group conversations
- Ability to send pictures
- Improved notifications across devices
Google could face issues moving forward with the name, but as far as the word Babel being trademarked, according to the United States Patent and Trademark Office website, the trademark was abandoned on November 2, 2009.
With Google I/O just months away, we should hear more details soon.
