Joining the growing list of clones of high-end popular Android smartphones in China, that includes the Samsung Galaxy Note 2, iPhone 5, and the still unreleased HTC One and Samsung Galaxy S4, is the HTC Butterfly aka the HTC Droid DNA. While Chinese manufacturer Goophone has become synonymous with releasing these “clones,” this time its another Chinese company, Star, that has done so, with the Star S5 Butterfly.

The Star S5 Butterfly boasts similar design aesthetics, down to the black and red styling of its HTC namesake, but that’s where the similarities yet. The specifications of the S5 Butterfly include a 5-inch 720p display, 1.2 Ghz quad-core MediTek MT6589 processor, 1GB RAM, 8GB internal storage expandable via microSD, 12MP rear camera and 3MP front camera, dual-SIM support, and Android 4.2 Jelly Bean on-board.
Of course, the specifications of the Star S5 Butterfly aren’t in the same league as the HTC Butterfly, but aren’t bad at all, and it does come with the latest Android OS iteration, especially considering the fact that the device is priced at just $222.99.
The obvious concern with an unknown manufacturer, at least unknown outside China, is quality, availability of software updates, and after sales support. No doubt there are some good smartphones on offer from local Chinese manufacturers, but waiting for a few hands-on reviews to appear is definitely recommended before making the jump.
What are your thoughts? Do you think the Star S5 Butterfly will be a good alternative to the far more expensive HTC Butterfly? What do you think about Chinese manufacturers ripping off the designs of popular internationally-renowned devices? Let us know in the comment section below.
