Although you might think that LG’s focus these days would be only to prepare the launch of the Optimus G, one very solid contender for the title of world’s most powerful smartphone, the Koreans seem to be readying other high-end devices as well.

The Optimus Vu 2 was first mentioned in August, but at the time LG was completely mum on the second-gen phablet’s spec sheet and availability details. However, someone seems to have spilled the beans big-time, because Android Greed has a trio of very legit-looking images showing off the Optimus Vu 2’s new design and listing most of its features.
As expected, the Vu 2 will be a major update over the first generation Optimus Vu, but there just seems to be something missing to make this as solid a contender as the Optimus G. The dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S3 processor powering the first Vu has been upgraded to an S4, but unfortunately it’s not the quad-core S4 Pro also found inside the G, but a more mundane MSM8960 dual-core CPU.

We surely couldn’t have wanted more than 2GB of RAM under the Vu 2’s hood, but the 5-inch LCD AH-IPS panel comes with the same 1024 x 768 pixels resolution of the first Vu, which is not necessarily poor, but it is more modest than the one on the G or the Galaxy Note 2.
The dual cameras on the new Vu also sound a bit disappointing, having the same 8 and 1.3MP sensors as the first time around. Other leaked features include 16GB of on-board storage, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, DLNA, 3G/HSPA, Bluetooth 4.0, LTE, NFC, microSD support, and a 2,150mAh battery.
There’s no mention about the handheld’s future dimensions and weight, but there don’t seem to be any major cosmetic changes. We can therefore expect the Vu 2 to weigh in at around 168 grams (a bit chubby by current standards), and measure 8.5 mm in thickness (which is still rather competitive).

LG might have not put a lot of thought behind the specs of this new device, but it does seem to have worked on adding some new and unique features. The Remote control app will let you use the Vu 2 as a controller for set-top boxes and other home appliances, while the Rubberdium Pen 2.0 should be the most attractive optional accessory.
Though we have no official word on when to expect the new “phablet”, the leaked images list it as running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, which is a clear indication that a launch is imminent. Then again, the first Optimus Vu started selling in March, so it would seem a bit weird for LG to release this one so soon after that.
In any case, it’s very likely for the Optimus Vu 2 to come to Korea first, while the States should definitely not expect to get the device by the end of the year. After all, Verizon just started to sell the first-gen “phoneblet” under the Intuition brand.
What do you guys think of the Optimus Vu 2? Is the spec sheet a bit disappointing? Or will it be good enough if LG gets it out fast and for a reasonable price?
