One of the biggest unpleasant surprises of IFA 2012 was LG, who was almost completely silent at the Berlin expo. That is at least as far as we Android enthusiasts are concerned, because the Koreans did have a couple of TV novelties to share.
We can’t hide our disappointment with LG’s poor showing at the IFA, especially that our bar of expectations was set very high in the wake of recent leaks and rumors. We were expecting to see a second-generation Optimus Vu, the mysterious Eclipse, and the Optimus G “beast” detailed and shown off. Instead, all we got was a stylish, but not very snappy Optimus L9.
Not even the Verizon-bound LG Intuition that leaked yesterday wasn’t that special; it’s just a tweaked version of the original Optimus Vu for the US market.
Now, a new LG handheld set to hit the States was leaked, hopefully paving the way for other more exciting new unveilings.
The LG P870, also known as the Escape, is an LTE-enabled AT&T-bound smartphone that stars in what DroidDog calls leaked “press shots”. We don’t know exactly how trustworthy these pics are, but they look legit and come from a decent source.
That said, the mid-range Escape can’t make up for LG’s silence in the high-end smartphone niche. The dual-core 1.5 GHz Qualcomm MSM8960 Snapdragon S4 processor is decent enough, but the 1 GB of RAM, 5 MP rear-facing camera and 4-inch display with 960 x 540 pixels resolution will certainly not help the Escape shine.
Although it’s not as sleek as the Optimus L9, the Escape looks like a rather classy handheld, with a kind of subtle striping on its back, three standard physical buttons, a thin vertical bezel, and an overall industrial look, with slightly rounded edges.
Other suspected features include Android 4.0 ICS on launch and NFC, but details about the Escape’s pricing and availability are completely unknown at this time. We’re ready to bet LG’s latest mid-ranger will hit AT&T by the end of September, but as far as pricing goes we don’t want to jump to any conclusions.
Anyone excited about the LG Escape? Is it the missing link in LG’s US line-up or just another device that’ll get lost in the crowd?
