It’s great to be Sony nowadays, with the impressive Xperia Z phone proving even more popular than expected as it’s slowly making its way to the world. And what do you do when you’re on a roll? You try to capitalize on those 15 minutes of fame and make them 20. Or, if you’re lucky, 25.
Enter the Xperia Tablet Z, Sony’s latest stab at an “iPad killer”. Sounds familiar? Well, it should, as it was first unveiled about a month ago in Japan.
What we didn’t know back then and we do now is that the 10-incher will land outside Asia (and, well, Finland) at some point. Also, pricing is no longer a thick cloud of mystery. Then again, we wouldn’t list that latter part as good news.
And that’s because the Tablet Z will start at $499 in the US in its 16 GB flavor, with the 32 GB variation going for 100 bucks extra. Not exactly prohibitive, but a serious deal breaker for some. After all, the Nexus 10 – the real iPad killer – is $399 via Google Play. And that bad boy has a better screen (much better, in fact) and a heftier battery (9,000 vs 6,000 mAh).
So, why would anyone want the Tab Z? For one, it’s incredibly sleek, with a 495-gram body and a 6.9 mm thin profile. It’s also water and dust proof, which is nice, we guess… if you plan on doing a reenactment of the Cast Away movie.
Irony aside, we won’t blame you if you’re going to be swept off your feet by the 10-incher’s sexy looks. In which case you’ll want to keep an eye out on your favorite retailers during Q2 (between April and June, that is). That’s the vague official ETA of the tab announced by Sony at MWC. Anyone want to go halfsies on one?
